Marijuana, Hemp, CBD; Why the Confusion?

People looking to explore the benefits of cannabis are often confronted with some confusion, especially when it comes to terminologies.

Let’s start with the basics:

The Difference Between Hemp and Marijuana

Contrary to a common belief, hemp and marijuana are not the same things.

Yes, they both come from the cannabis family, but they are different in terms of chemical composition, effects, and even legality.

While marijuana is high on THC, the compound responsible for the ‘high’ effect in the cannabis plant, hemp contains less than 0.3% THC. This means that it can’t get users high.

Also, following the 2018 hemp bill, hemp is federally legal. It’s high on CBD (Cannabidiol), a compound that’s being praised for its numerous health benefits.

Hemp Oil vs. CBD Oil; What Makes them Different?

Both hemp and CBD extracts are derived from the hemp plant, albeit from different parts of the plant.

Hemp oil is extracted from the seeds of the hemp plant. It’s rich in vitamins and nutrients but contains no active cannabinoids.

In other words, hemp oil won’t give you any CBD.

Hemp seed oil is a popular ingredient in cooking oil, hair, and skin products, thanks to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

On the other hand, CBD oil is derived from the leaves, stalks, and flowers of the hemp plant. As the name implies, CBD is the main ingredient in CBD tincture.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that CBD can help manage a myriad of health conditions, including anxiety, back, and joint pain.

Tricky Marketing Tactics of Hemp Seed Oil and CBD Oil

Although hemp seed oil is not the same as CBD oil, some companies often market them as the same thing (either intentionally or not).

Here’s Why;

One of the reasons why some companies may wrongly market hemp seed oil as CBD oil is because consumers are willing to pay more for CBD oil.

So some brands will just package their hemp seed oil, adorn it with marijuana leaves and label it as cannabis-based oil to make consumers pay a premium price thinking they are buying CBD oil.

The other side of the coin: some brands will market their CBD products as hemp oil to avoid the FDA regulations on cannabis derivatives.

How to Differentiate Between Hemp Oil and CBD Oil

  • Check the Ingredients

The surest way to differentiate between CBD and hemp tinctures is by checking the listed ingredients.

If you notice the term hemp seed oil or hemp seeds listed as the ingredients, then you’re most probably dealing with hemp extract.

Some companies will market their products as hemp oil, but if you examine the ingredients, you will notice raw, organic hemp seed oil.

Other companies may market their products as hemp oil, but a closer examination will reveal ‘whole-plant extract’ or ‘full-spectrum hemp extract’ or ‘broad-spectrum extract’ being listed as the active ingredients.

CBD tinctures or sprays will also have carrier oils such as MCT or olive oil listed on the label.

When you come across products labeled as ‘hemp oil’ take your time to examine the ingredients.

You can also ask the manufacturer whether your product is hemp seed oil or CBD oil.  Ask questions like, how much CBD does this CBD cream, for instance, contain?

  • Extraction Methods

The extraction method is another way you can use to differentiate between these two tinctures.

While hemp oil is generally produced using the cold-extraction method (using seeds), CBD tincture production involves the whole plant and using sophisticated extraction techniques such as the CO2 extraction method.

So if you check the certificates of analysis and notice CO2 as the extraction method, there are high chances that you’re dealing with CBD extract.

On the other hand, if you notice the cold-extraction listed as the extraction technique used, you’re most likely dealing with hemp seed oil.

  • CBD Content

Of course, CBD oil must contain CBD. While it’s not a requirement, most companies will list the amount of CBD in their products.

For instance, in our Swiss Relief CBD Oral Spray, you will notice a label of the total amount of CBD in this product, which is 120mg.

If your company is not ready to reveal the amount of CBD in their products, there’s a good chance there’s no CBD at all!

  • Difference In Usage

All these differences between hemp seed extract and CBD tincture would probably not matter if the two products served the same purpose.

As mentioned earlier, hemp seed oil is generally found in skincare and hair products. It can also be used for cooking.

It has a rich nutritional profile, including vitamins, fiber, protein essential fatty acids (omega-3 and omega-6), health minerals, etc.

Hemp seed oil may benefit you by introducing all these minerals into your body, thereby boosting your immune system.

On the other hand, CBD is said to interact with the endocannabinoid system, which is a system of receptors responsible for regulating vital body functions such as pain, immune system response, sleep, appetite, etc.
